How to Choose the Right Gym: A Beginners Guide

When it comes to choosing a gym, there are so many different options. So, how does one choose the right gym? Every person is different and has their own preferences on what they want, or need from a gym. Do you want to get fitter or healthier, or have you been told by your doctor that you need to do something different otherwise your health will get much worse.

What type of Membership options are there?

The type of membership options that a gym has will help you determine what works best for your situation.
A 24 hour gym might be a cheaper option but will it have the support you need? I Personal Coaching only gym will be more expensive but will keep you more accountable and give you a greater chance of reaching your goals.
Ultimately, you need to work out what you need; accountability, or just a facility to train because you have the discipline to get it done. 

What are your goals?

One very important thing to think about is what your goals are. If you are new to the gym, it’s important to have a goal in mind that you want to achieve. 

If you want to begin weight lifting, you probably want to find a gym and a coach that will help you become proficient in these movements before jumping under a heavy barbell. 

If you want to build endurance, find a gym and a coach that knows how to explain the best way to do that. 

If you want to lose some weight to be fitter and healthier, find a gym that you feel comfortable being you and the environment and people are supportive and encouraging.

Does the staff and owner support you?

You can learn a lot about a gym by simply having a chat with the staff or owner. Do they offer a free appointment to find out more or do they just go ad hoc and wing meeting you if they’re around. As always a simple flick through their google reviews and their social media pages will give you the first look you might need.
Do the coaches seem to really care about clients' progress and goals? Do they support their members? This can be a good indicator of how the gym is run as a whole.

What Activities Will Be Offered?

Do you prefer to train alone or in a group? This can help you decide what membership options are going to suit you best. If you prefer to be in a group how many others are you willing to share the coach with? This will give you a coach to person ratio, how much “time” do you get the coach for during your session. 

What Equipment Will Be Available?

Equipment isn’t everything but if you’re used to seeing a bunch of weight machines and you don’t see that in another gym, definitely ask! Their coaching methods may have other ways to get you moving that do not need machines. Why do they do this is a good question to ask.

Other Important Factors

These include: The location of the gym, the type of people who go to the gym and the type of atmosphere the gym has.

You are definitely not going to take a 10 minute detour to go the gym, an easy solution is to pick one, on the way to or from work. One that is a couple of minutes walk might be an easier option for many reasons. Not having to worry about traffic or parking issues
Are the members friendly and supportive? Are there people with the same goals as you? These are all things that can help keep you motivated and accountable. 

The atmosphere or vibe of the gym can affect your experience. It is definitely worth checking the place out in person. From the people (members, coaches, the owner) to the music and feel. If it doesn’t fit you, it won’t work.

Lastly, Cost

Remember, you get what you pay for; if you pay 6, 8, 10 or even 12 dollars per week that is what you are going to get, and likely you are going to be treated like a number. There won’t be any coaching, the clientele are probably in and out without cleaning their own equipment. This kind of environment is really only suited to those who are disciplined and get the work done or for those that really don’t end up achieving their goals but wasting money week on week for a gym they might use.
Having a budget in mind is definitely important, when you set out on your gym finding adventure, have a weekly or monthly budget in mind.
A good gym/coach will always try to work with your budget, it is about finding a balance between your budget and your health. How much would you pay to live a healthier life with less need for any medical assistance?
